Elementary Lois - With a Song in my Heart - Vol 1 by Lois Strickland StooksburyGrower: Goodness Sake
Price: $21.95 ( audiobook )Available (Estimated): 6
Cassette Audiobook. Growing up during the 1930's and 1940's with her family, which moved from town to town as her father opened dime stores, provides the background for this rich and surprising collection of true stories. As seen through the eyes of a child and written much later in life by a seasoned author, the eighteen stories in this audiobook recreate the unique flavor and culture of that timeframe, explore the relationships and society of rural America, but more importantly, tell wonderful stories that can be enjoyed by all ages. A great book for homeschool.
My favorite story in this collection is That Old Black Magic, about her secret contribution to her mother's remarkable recovery from polio. Another story tells of Lois' chance meeting with a Look Magazine photographer while she is outside playing and her parent's reaction to the offer for her photo to be featured in Look. Ching, her chow dog, always seemed to be in the middle of things. The dog definitely had a mind of her own--like the day Ching refused to be left outside the radio station when Lois went in to sing on the air.
You will meet the people who lived and worked around Lois, like the washwoman and the man who came in to their house in the middle of the night to keep the fireplaces going in a big old house. Set in towns in Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, Virginia, Missouri, and New York, it is hard to believe that one person could have so many interesting things happen in her life...but as Lois used to say in writing classes she taught, "Truth is stranger than fiction." Copyright 1997 by Transom Press. Read by the author with professional digital editing. Enjoy.
